The 2nd Annual Pier to Pier Run, Crab Crawl and SUP Race was held at Wrightsville Beach on Saturday, June 7. The family-friendly event featured a 5k run on the beach, a standup paddleboard race, and a kid’s crab crawl competition.

At 8 a.m., the paddleboarders entered the water at Johnnie Mercer’s Pier and paddled through choppy seas to Crystal Pier. For an extra challenge, competitors then had the option to turn the race into a biathlon by running back to Johnnie Mercer’s Pier.

Around 8:15, the children lined up on the beach in their best crab crawl stances. Cheered on by their families, they crawled about 40 yards through the sand to the finish line, where they received a medal and a toy crab.

At 8:30, runners gathered beneath Johnnie Mercer’s Pier to begin the 5k beach run. By then, the sea breeze had picked up, providing the competitors some relief from the heat as they jogged to Crystal Pier and back.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Wrightsville Beach Foundation.
