Chancellor Gary L. Miller will resign, effective July 31, and has been named the Chancellor-elect of University of Wisconsin-Green Bay (http://www.uwgb.edu/), the university announced today.
Chancellor Miller will continue to lead UNCW through July and will assume the role of Chancellor of UW-GB on August 1.
“I have been honored to work with an extraordinary team of faculty, staff, and campus leaders at UNCW. Together we have accomplished so much, and I know they will continue to provide a world-class academic experience for UNCW’s students,” commented Chancellor Miller. “The opportunity at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is an extremely exciting one that will allow me to continue to make an impact in higher education, through Green Bay’s commitment to innovation, access to education for all, community partnerships and economic engagement. The UW system is one of the finest in the country and I am eager to dive in and discover how I can support the mission and tradition of excellence at Green Bay. Georgia and I have enjoyed our time in Wilmington and are grateful for the support of this community, and for the friendships we have formed both on- and off-campus. We are excited to join the Green Bay community after meeting such warm and welcoming people during our visits. I will be leaving UNCW in excellent hands, including those of a top-notch leadership team.”
Chancellor Miller was named the fourth chancellor of UNCW in July of 2011 and assumed his duties immediately; he was officially installed in April of 2012.
Among Chancellor Miller’s achievements during his time at UNCW were:
- the implementation of his “Dare to Soar” vision, consisting of three enduring values: the commitment to the journey of learning, a love of place, and the power of ideas and innovation. This vision laid the groundwork for the university’s strategic action plan;
- the development and opening of The Marine Biotechnology Center (MARBIONC), as part of the university’s CREST Research Park;
- the creation of a Community Partnerships office to increase the university’s engagement with the Wilmington community and the state;
- establishing the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (the CIE);
- the creation of the University Innovation Council to elicit and operationalize ideas from faculty, staff and students for university improvement through innovation;
- spearheading an online public-private education program for nursing students, which was the first such model in NC;
- a structural and fiscal overhaul of UNCW Athletics, which led to a significant rise in community support for student-athletes and the development of an outdoor recreation facilities plan;
- co-chairing a steering committee of area business, government and environmental representatives as part of Wilmington’s Economic Development Planning Initiative;
- serving as the Chair of the Council of Presidents for the Colonial Athletic Association.
