A 27-year-old woman was charged with misdemeanor child abuse by Wilmington police Saturday, July 12, after leaving her infant child in a vehicle.

Witnesses and police officials said the mother left the child unattended at Walnart’s parking lot on Market Street. The vehicle was off.

At 9:50 p.m., police were notified of the baby. The Wilmington Fire Department arrived on scene and broke the driver side window, rescuing the child. According to police, the baby was not harmed.

Police officials said the baby was trapped inside the vehicle for at least 15 minutes.

“When we came out [of Walmart], there was a lady calling 911,” eyewitness Jennifer Best said. “I saw the baby stop crying. And then the mom came out with shopping bags in her hands.”
