Man charged with DWI in school bus accident

Around 7:30 a.m. a black Nissan Altima collided into the front of a school bus near the intersection of Wrightsville Ave. and Rose Ave.

The bus was carrying eight students westbound on the first day of school, seven to Holly Shelter Middle School and one to Trask Middle School. The student heading to Trask Middle School was transported to Cape Fear Memorial Hospital for minor injuries but is expected to recover quickly.

Officers with the Wilmington Police Department charged 38-year-old Robert Phillip Carroll of Wilmington with DWI and careless and reckless driving.

Witnesses told police that Carroll’s Nissan was heading eastbound on Wrightsville Ave. when it swerved across the center line.

The bus received minor damage and completed its route to Holly Shelter Middle School.
