Rouzing up beach support

Must read

A Sept. 10 fundraiser for David Rouzer, Republican candidate for North Carolina’s 7th congressional district, at Mayor Bill Blair’s home in Wrightsville Beach raked in close to $30,000.

Blair said he hosted the event to provide a platform for Wrightsville Beach residents to meet Rouzer and hear about his campaign after recognizing his dedication to important coastal issues like beach renourishment. A crowd of 30-40 islanders, including Mayor Pro Tem Darryl Mills and Alderman Hank Miller, attended.

Rouzer listed beach renourishment and dredging as two of his top priorities if elected. He said he is already establishing relationships in Washington to secure appointments to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the House Committee on Agriculture, committees he sees as the best fit for the interests and needs of the 7th district.

“Both [committees] as a freshman is almost unheard of, but we’re in a good spot to do it,” Rouzer said.

On Aug. 29, Rep. Bill Shuster, chairman of the transportation and infrastructure committee, visited Wrightsville Beach with Rouzer to talk to local beach town officials and see the effects of beach renourishment from Johnnie Mercer’s Pier.

“The more invested I can get my colleagues in this area, the easier it is for me to help us,” he said.

Blair said he sees Rouzer as on-track to continue the financial support drummed up by Congressman Mike McIntyre for beach management projects.

“We’ve always had support and I think David will continue that and improve on it, and he seems to already have some of the connections to keep it going,” Blair said.

In November, Rouzer will face Democrat Jonathan Barfield, Jr., currently a New Hanover County Commissioner, for the 7th district seat.
