Collegiate and professional golf champion Abby Pearson has been named assistant men’s and women’s golf coach at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

Pearson, 41, was assistant coach at Ball State University, Western Michigan University and Penn State University prior to UNCW.

“I am extremely excited to join the Seahawks golf staff here at UNCW,” Pearson said in a Sept. 10 press release from the athletic department. “Having the opportunity to help each student-athlete achieve their goals is one of my greatest passions!”

During her collegiate career, the University of Tennessee named Pearson the first women’s golf All-American, and the Southeastern Conference’s Co-Freshman of the Year in 1993.

Pearson’s professional career began in 1995 when she signed on the Future’s Tour and claimed three tournament victories, five second-place finishes and 21 top-10 showings. She won the Gulf Telephone Future’s Classic in 1997, and the Pacific Future’s Classic and MedHealth Wellness Centers Future’s Classic in 1998. Pearson is 22 on the Future’s all-time money list before competing in the 2003 United States Women’s Open Championship.

UNCW’s women’s golf coach Cindy Ho in a Sept 10 press release said, “Abby has won at every level of the game and is very passionate about teaching.”

“She’s an outstanding player and teacher, which will help her make an immediate impact with both programs,” said head men’s golf coach Matt Clark in a Sept. 10 press release.

The UNCW Seahawk golf program is ranked as a North Carolina Athletic Association Division I team in the Colonial Athletic Association conference. The men’s and women’s program have won nine Colonial Athletic Association championships and 11 NCAA tournament bids in the last 11 years.

“I am honored to serve both men’s and women’s golf programs and look forward to assisting both Coach Clark and Coach Ho to a CAA Championship,” said Pearson.
