Smith services set for Wednesday, Oct. 8

Services for Joseph Lansing Smith Sr. will be held 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Andrews Mortuary on Market Street. Smith, of Wilmington, died Friday, Oct. 3 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice. He was 88. With four other partners he formed the Lumina Corporation in the early 1960s, repainting Lumina Pavilion and installing a new bar called the Upper Deck. In the 1980s, Smith also established the Dockside Restaurant and Marina along with his nephew, Wright Holman. He had a lifelong connection to Summer Rest Road and was happiest when gill netting spots, shrimping, mullet seining, oystering, clamming or crabbing the Intercostal Waterway and its marshes or fishing for Blues and Spanish mackerel in a Simmons Sea Skiff off Wrightsville Beach.vSmith is survived by his older sister, Nancy Smith Rose; wife, Margret E. Smith; former wife, Virginia G. Smith; and his three sons, Joseph L. Smith, Jr., Burrows G. Smith, and Andrew Fleming Smith.
