Must read

A chilly drizzle didn’t deter 118 competitors from racing in the 32nd Annual Seaside Shuffle 5K Sunday, Nov. 23.

The women’s division started at 1:00 p.m. The race began near the intersection of Waynick Boulevard and Causeway Drive and competitors raced south to the Wrightsville Beach Coastguard Station and back.

SeasideShuffle1Eleven-year-old Makayla Obremski, who set a state record for her age group in the race two years ago, kept pace with 54-year-old Brenda Estlack. They opened up a lead on the rest of the participants.

As the two competitors neared the finish line, Obremski quickened her pace and drew out in front. She crossed the finish line first with a final time of 20:54, and Estlack was just steps behind in 21:03.

The men’s division began at 1:45 p.m. Tom Clifford took the lead shortly after the start of the race and never relinquished it. He finished first with a final time of 15:06.

Proceeds from the race benefitted a scholarship fund created by the Wilmington Road Runners Club to supplement college costs for two high school seniors.
