Fire department honors its own during annual Christmas dinner

The Wrightsville Beach Fire Department held its 99th annual Christmas dinner and awards ceremony at 22 North Saturday, Dec. 13, to honor and recognize the firefighters serving Wrightsville Beach throughout the past year.

Sponsored by the Wrightsville Beach Volunteer Firefighters Association, the event also provided an opportunity to acknowledge and honor several individuals.

Firefighter Calvin Smith received the Firefighter of the Year award for his outstanding overall contribution to the department. Smith also received the award for Most Fire Alarm Responses with 144 total.

Firefighter Thomas Long received the Service Commendation award recognizing his consistent and outstanding service supporting the department’s mission.

Receiving 200 Club awards for attending more than 200 hours of fire service training during the past year were firefighters John Scull, Calvin Smith and Jeffrey Williams.

Firefighter Marcus Scott received the Best Drill Attendance Award for attending 34 departmental training drills during the past year.

Smith also received the Most Duty Time Award for serving 425 on-call duty shifts.

Five-year Service Anniversary awards were presented to lead fire equipment operator Michael Garner, firefighter Adam Fink and firefighter Matthew Griffith.

A 10-year Service Anniversary award was presented to Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue Director Dave Baker.

Captain Adam Brown was recognized for 25 years of service to the WBFD.

Sarah Pugh, daughter of Captain Robert Pugh, and firefighter Garrett McQueen were recognized as recipients of Wrightsville Beach Fire Department Relief Fund Scholarships.

The Wilmington Fire Department provided an engine company that stood by at the Wrightsville Beach fire station during the dinner so all WBFD personnel could attend the event.
