Must read

Confederate widowhood, the cult of sacrifice, and death among black Union regiments are among the topics to be explored during a Feb. 27-28 symposium on the Civil War.

“What a Cruel Thing is War: Sacrifice and Legacies of the Civil War” is the last of three such events organized by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Presentations will be held Feb. 27 at Murrow Hall, Southport, and Feb. 28 at Morton Hall on the campus of UNC-Wilmington. The event also features afternoon tours of Fort Anderson on Feb. 27.

Registration is $26.29, or $10.68 for students, and includes lunch on Saturday. UNC-W students may attend at no charge, with the option of lunch for $10. Register at www.ncdcr.gov/CivilWarSymposium or, for more information, call (919) 807-8290.
