A longtime N.C. Coastal Resources Commission member and former chairman was awarded the commission’s highest honor yesterday.

Current chairman Frank Gorham presented former chairman Robert R. Emory with the Eure-Gardner Award during a Feb. 18 commission meeting in Atlantic Beach, N.C. The Eure-Gardner Award is presented to individuals and organizations that have protected the natural, cultural and economic resources of North Carolina’s coast in significant ways.

Emory, currently an environmental manager for the Southern Timberlands Operations of Weyerhaeuser Co. in New Bern, served on the commission for 20 years, from 1994 to 2014.  He was appointed chairman of the board in 2007 former governor Mike Easley.

“Throughout the course of his time with the CRC, Bob was known for his fairness, his calm demeanor, and his willingness to hear all sides of each of the complex issues brought before the commission,” said Braxton Davis, director of the N.C. Division of Coastal Management, in a Feb. 19 press release.  “For all of his efforts, his approach, and his leadership, he is truly deserving of the Eure-Gardner Award.”
