Public invited to offshore drilling info meeting

Must read

Representatives from the federal government will stop by Wrightsville Beach tomorrow to explain details of a draft program, released earlier this year, that could open the federal waters off the North Carolina coast to offshore oil and gas operations.

Held at the Blockade Runner Beach Resort from 3 to 7 p.m. on Feb. 17, the public information meeting, one of five meetings along the Atlantic coast organized by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), provides North Carolinians with an opportunity to learn more about the proposed leasing program by speaking one-on-one with BOEM representatives. The public will also be able to submit written comments on the draft program at the meeting.

Environmental groups from across the state partnered together to organize an opportunity for the public to voice concerns about offshore drilling during the meeting. Five community leaders, including New Hanover County Commissioners Chairman Jonathan Barfield, Jr., will discuss the risks of drilling at 5 p.m. in the resort’s courtyard. At least 100 people, all encouraged to wear blue to show opposition to drilling, are expected to attend.

For more information on the proposal, visit the BOEM website.
