Massive, but well-behaved crowds relax on Wrightsville

Must read

The first day of the Memorial Day weekend went smoothly at Wrightsville Beach, WBPD captain Paul Burdette reported, with traffic congestion being the only real issue.

Sunny skies, light winds and temperatures in the upper 70’s drew massive crowds to the island Saturday, May 23, causing traffic to move slowly as beachgoers searched for any available parking spots.

Burdette said the police department staged extra manpower in the busier parts of the island, like Johnnie Mercer’s Pier and the downtown district, but as of the early afternoon no tickets had been written.

“On the beach strand, knock on wood, everything is quiet,” he said. “It’s very crowded, but it’s a well-behaved crowd.”

Stay tuned for more updates throughout the weekend.
