Police department honors late Sgt. Edward Haynes

The Wilmington Police Department will unveil a plaque in memory of one of the first African-American officers hired by the department since the Coupe of 1989. The ceremony honoring the late Sgt. Edward Haynes will be held Thursday, May 28 at 1 p.m. at the Wilmington Police Department. The public is invited.

Haynes was hired in 1954 following pressure from local chapter of the NAACP and others to hire black officers. He retied from the department in 1984 as the city’s first African-American sergeant. Haynes died at his home in Wilmington last year.
