Coastal Federation offers summer STEM camps

Must read

This summer, high school students will have an opportunity to attend hands-on research camps during the North Carolina Coastal Federation’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Summer Science Camps. Campers will study coastal environmental issues.

“This is a new program for us. It’s our summer science camp,” said Ted Wilgis, coastal education coordinator for the North Carolina Coastal Federation. “It was made possible through support from the Landfall Foundation,” Wilgis said.

The camps are based out of the Fred and Alice Stanback Coastal Education center. Participants will spend time in the salt marshes near Wrightsville Beach and in other outdoor locations.

The first session will be held June 22-26. Attendees will learn about restoring oyster reefs and the importance of oysters in marine ecosystems. They will also work with scientists to develop a oyster reef restoration project. Registration will be open until June 19.

The second session will take place July 20-24 will focus on rain garden construction. Students will learn about rainwater runoff along the coast by researching water quality issues in local tidal creeks and by constructing a rain garden.

Registration for the second session will be open until July 17.

The camps will take place 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Each session has a maximum of 15 students and costs $200 per student.

“We have scholarships available. We don’t want students to miss out because of how much it costs,” Wilgis said. “We are trying to reach a wide community.”

Snacks and refreshments are complimentary, but students are requested to bring their own lunches. Students who receive free or reduced-price lunches during the school year may request that lunch be provided.
