K9 Jorga receives bulletproof vest

Must read

Like many law enforcement officials who track criminals on the run, K9 Jorga’s work often takes her in the line of fire. To help protect her in these dangerous situations, the charitable organization Vested Interest in K9s supplied the 2-year-old Dutch shepherd with a bulletproof vest July 29 after raising money with an online fundraiser.

“She’s hunting for people after bank robberies,” her handler Randy Searls said last month. “We’re on crime scenes where we’ve got to go search someone’s house for any sign of a murder…and we never know when we’re going to take fire. But she’s amazing around gunfire, she literally lays in front of me as a bullet sponge as I shoot over her.”

Jorga’s vest was purchased after the group’s  “Occasions” campaign to outfit police K9’s with bullet and stab protective vests raised more than $335,000 online.  All vests carry the inscription “In Memory of K9 Rocco, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police” in memory of a police dog that died in the line of duty in January 2014.
