Heavy waves and rain pelted the region Sunday and brought high tides to Wrightsville Beach that were powerful enough to knock over one lifeguard stand and threaten another. On the south end of Wrightsville Beach, high tides tore down lifeguard stand no. 13, separating the base and the stand by about 100 yards. However, on the north end, punishing high tide surf failed to topple the no. 3 stand, which withstood a pounding throughout Sunday.
High tides batter lifeguard stand no. 3, located in front of the Holiday Inn near beach access no. 9, throughout the day on Sunday, but the stand withstood the pounding.
