Saturday Beach2Battleship triathlon will create road closures, traffic delays in Wrightsville Beach, Wilmington

As more than 2,300 athletes swim, bike and run their way through the Beach2Battleship triathlon on Saturday, Oct. 17, residents of Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach can expect road closures and traffic delays.

In Wrightsville Beach, traffic delays will occur between 7:30-10:30 a.m. on Causeway Drive, Old Causeway Drive, Dock Street, Keel Street, Short Street and Marina Street.

In Wilmington, northbound traffic should avoid the section of Market Street (Highway 17) near Porters Neck Road from 7:30 a.m.-10a.m.. All motorists traveling on the part of Market Street between Military Cutoff and I-140 should be aware of cyclists on the road until noon. Drivers traveling to Brunswick County from Wilmington should use the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge instead of the Isabel Holmes Bridge and Hwy 421. Southbound traffic on Hwy 421 from I-140 to the USS North Carolina Battleship may experience traffic delays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Downtown Wilmington, the section of Water Street from Grace Street to Dock Street will be closed from noon on Friday, Oct. 16 until 2 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18.

I am all for bring dollars to the area,,, But with a delay of a half hour to get on Market from Middle sound loop,,, that was unacceptable,,,, The New Hanover Sheriff department needs training in traffic direction,,,, There were ample break’s in the Bike traffic to allow cars out and they did nothing,,,, Only after numerous calls did they finally have an Officer who knew what she was doing to get us rolling,,,, I think the route or traffic control issues need to be addressed before the next event,,,,
