Art sale raises funds for CAM Museum School scholarships

Must read

Several artists showed off their work while raising money for art education in Wilmington on Nov. 13-14.

Realtor Barbara Pugh hosted the fundraiser at 211 Summer Rest Road, which raised money for the Cameron Art Museum “Museum School” program that will go to fund scholarships for children to attend the school. For artists Gabriel Lovejoy, who has taught at the museum school, the program provided a pathway to art that many young students wouldn’t receive otherwise.

“Some of these kids not have ever touched a paintbrush,” Lovejoy said. “Some of these students have went on to art school to pursue their passion, which they never would have found without the scholarship.”

On Friday, the fundraiser was already halfway towards its goal of $10,000, Pugh said. CAM director Anne Brennan said groups like the Brigade Boys & Girls Club and the Wilmington Housing Authority will recommend students for the scholarship program, which selects its recipients based on need.

The location of the event also had ties to art. When the owner of the Wilmington home saw a painting of his home by artist Fritz Kapraun in an advertisement for the CAM Museum School, he wanted to help and offered his home as a location for the event. The home is currently listed by Pugh.
