Wrightsville Beach was awarded a $300,000 grant from a regional healthcare organization to add handicap-accessible playground equipment to Wrightsville Beach Park.
Representatives from Trillium Health Resources presented the Play Together Construction Grant to the town during the Nov. 12 Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen meeting.
“We’re going to offer so many things that you weren’t able to do before,” Trillium project manager Amy Corbitt said, adding that the inclusive equipment is meant for people of all ages and Hugh MacRae Park is getting a similar grant.
Within the coming months, a representative from Trillium Health Resources will visit the playground to determine what equipment can fit in the available space. Town staff recommended making the public restroom entrances handicap-accessible, because while they meet minimum ADA requirements they pose significant challenges for persons with disabilities.
The grant also requires construction of a wheelchair-accessible swing called a Liberty Swing.
