Police investigating possible public suicide on Wrightsville Beach

Must read

Wrightsville Beach Police are investigating a suspicious death that occurred on the beach strand Thursday after a middle-aged white male was found with a gunshot wound to the head. While Police Chief Dan House said that police were still investigating, and couldn’t yet declare the death a suicide, he said the indications that the man had shot himself. He was found near the dunes,  about 200 yards south of beach access no.2 on the north end of Wrightsville Beach, near Shell Island Resort.

Police are still trying to gather information about the man, including his identity, which will not be released until next of kin are notified.

House said investigators treat all deaths as homicides before the medical examiner declares the death a suicide. However, he added that there were no suspicions at this point that anyone else was involved. The handgun that investigators believed was used to inflict the head wound was found at the scene.

Police received a call from 911 operators at 12:31 p.m., House said, and officers arrived minutes afterwards. House said he wasn’t aware of any witnesses to the shooting.

“Our investigators are trying to figure out who he is and where he came from,” House said. “We assume he drove there from somewhere.”
