Historic Wilmington Foundation celebrates 50 years

Must read

The Historic Wilmington Foundation is celebrating its 50th anniversary throughout May with a series of art exhibits and tours honoring the preservation of the city’s past.

Several exhibits and an auction will offer artistic interpretations of some of Wilmington’s historic sites. The Cape Fear Camera Club will hang 40 images depicting various aspects of the city’s history, from tiny overlooked details to iconic landmarks, according to a press release. The exhibit will be displayed at the Hannah Block Historic USO and Community Arts Center at Second and Orange streets through May 29.

Another photography exhibit—this one featuring smart phone photography—will highlight the work of students from Laney, New Hanover and Ashley high schools. The students will hang 70 original works in the show, which opens softly Monday, May 2 and closes Friday, May 13.

Younger students from Gregory School of Science, Math and Technology have also created work to honor the anniversary. The students artfully repurposed five-panel wood doors supplied by Historic Wilmington Foundation’s Legacy Architectural Salvage, and they will display the doors and then auction them off May 7 at New Elements Gallery.

Other pieces auctioned off that night will include work by well-known local artists like Bruce Bowman, Betty Brown, Clyde Edgerton, Janet Triplett and Owen Wexler.

Several more events May 7 offer the public a chance to see and learn about the city’s historic landmarks firsthand. A walking tour will take people through some of the first houses saved by the foundation’s preservation program, which was founded in 1966. The day also features hands-on children’s activities at the Children’s Museum of Wilmington.
