MARINE CORPS JET CRASH: Coast Guard boat securing debris field off Wrightsville Beach

Must read

A U.S. Coast Guard cutter remains in the area of Marine Corps jet crash off of Wrightsville Beach to help secure what remains of the debris field, a Coast Guard spokesman said on Saturday. A Marine Corps pilot spokeswoman said the pilot, who ejected from the jet before it went down, was in stable condition and recovering at home.

The Coast Guard report reflects that Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue were among the first on the scene of the crash Friday, the spokesman said.  The Wrightsville Beach Fire Department said Ocean Rescue members Jeremy Owens and Kyle Miess rode a jet ski out to the scene, being among the first to help secure the pilot before Coast Guard and U.S. Navy divers arrived. The Wrightsville Beach Station launched a 45-foot medium sized response boat after receiving a 911 call from a patron of the Holiday Inn, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Adam Sansoucie.  A Navy helicopter, along with two divers, also arrived to help secure the pilot.

The crash left both a field of debris and a sheen of fuel, however, most of the debris dissipated by sinking into the ocean. The sheen of JP-5 jet fuel burned off of the surface of the ocean and also dissipated,  Sansoucie said. The Wrightsville Beach Coast Guard station also deployed a 24-foot boat to help secure the debris field. Currently, the Coast Guard Cutter Nantucket, out of Station Ft. Macon, is at the scene.
