A Wilmington artist’s depiction of a decades-old festival is being featured on two million Diet Pepsi cans being distributed throughout North Carolina. The commemorative cans featuring artwork designed by Sarah Sheffield are a promotion for the 40th anniversary of the Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival in Cary, N.C., on August 27 – 28.

When Sheffield was originally contracted to design the poster for the festival, she wanted to capture the essence of the event that she has both contributed to and attended in years past.  For her, the festival is a representation of joy, happiness, and family, and she depicted this through a detailed scene of people mingling among tents, music, sunny skies and brightly colored balloons.LazyDazefinal1

It wasn’t until she had finished her piece that Sheffield learned her artwork would be on the Diet Pepsi cans.  Her design needed to be modified to fit the smaller scale, Pepsi colors, and simplified nature of the can.  Being, “an old-fashioned painter” she wasn’t familiar with the graphic design aspect of the job, and she employed her daughter-in-law, Bette Sheffield, to help with the changes.

This year’s festival coordinators originally contacted Sheffield, former Cultural Arts Supervisor of Cary, in January asking her to design a poster for the event.  Sheffield’s artwork includes pieces that feature local scenes of downtown Wilmington as well as beach scenes from Bradley Creek and South Port.
