Matthew’s winds damage Wrightsville Beach’s Shell Island Resort

Wrightsville Beach had pumps operating in the morning to keep the sewers running properly and there was some minor damage in some places, with the worst apparently at Shell Island Resort, which saw the high-rise building damaged in a few places.

“We fared pretty well. All and all, it could have been worse,” said town manager Tim Owens.

At Shell Island Resort, winds tore holes in the buildings north and west side exteriors, exposing pipes and cables. Staff said the resort was closed on Saturday night when the worst of the winds battered Wrightsville Beach.

The beaches likely suffered some erosion, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers would be studying the damage, Owens said. There was also some flooding in the central business district on Saturday, as the area on North Lumina Avenue from Stone Street to Columbia Street was prone to tidal flooding, but it had mostly disappeared by the evening, he said.
