Surfers enter their final heat during the 2011 Crystal South Surf Community Wahine Contest.

The Wrightsville Beach Wahine Classic all-female surf contest is planned for Aug. 17 and 18 on the south end of Wrightsville Beach. Preliminary heats will be held Saturday and finals will be held Sunday.

“We’re adding a standup paddle surf division and a standup paddleboard race,” said contest co-organizer Jo Pickett of Crystal South Surf Camp. She stated that the contest would have all the excitement and fun of other wahine championships in previous years.

The atmosphere will be one of openness to all, including those not surfing. There will be two games per hour in which contestants and non-contestants can participate. The contest draws talented surfers from a broad geographical base.

“We’ll have some local pros like Darsha Pigford, some girls coming from the Outer Banks including Leanne Foster, and some girls from South Carolina, just to name a few,” Pickett said. She said she expects to field at least 50 competitors total, the pro divisions vying for a cash purse of $500 to $200 for first place, $150 for second place, $100 for third place and $50 for fourth place.

The entry fee for the pro shortboard and pro longboard divisions for all ages is $80. Pros can enter amateur divisions, provided they are different events.  Initial amateur entries are $40 plus $15 per entry into additional divisions. For the youngest competitors, there will be a guppy division for surfers 12 and younger, as well as the Teenie Wahine division for ages 10 and younger. The Teenie Wahine division requires a parent or someone to assist in-water and has an entry fee of $15.

The shortboard age divisions are novice 15 and younger, novice 16 and older, girls 13 to 14, junior women 15 to 17, women 18 to 29 and ladies 30 and older. The longboard age divisions are 14 and younger, 15 to 19, 20 to 39 and 40 and older. There are two age divisions for both the SUP surf and the SUP race, 15 and younger and 16 and older, and they each have an entry fee of $50. Registration forms can be found at
