A 16-year-old girl was eating a piece of cake behind the wheel of her car when the vehicle crashed on the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge on July 23.
At about 8:30 p.m., three girls—all juveniles—were riding in a Landrover SUV traveling eastbound over the drawbridge when the driver bumped the median, overcorrected and then smashed into the concrete guardrail, according to Wrightsville Beach Police Officer D. H. Patel and a police report.
Patel, who was at the scene, said traffic was backed up for hours in both directions.
One of the passengers was transported to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. The driver and the remaining passenger did not require significant medical attention, Patel said. The driver was cited for safe moving violation.
Juveniles’ identities are kept confidential.
Wrightsville Beach Police Chief John Carey said work crews with the North Carolina Department of Transportation made temporary repairs to the drawbridge the night of the accident.
Permanent repairs will begin next week and should end by Friday. Amanda Glynn, an NCDOT bridge program manager, said crews will intermittenly close the right eastbound lane of traffic while they replace a 13-foot section of guardrail with new concrete.
Repairs are estimated to total $15,000, and will be charged to the driver’s insurance, said Chuck Francka, an NCDOT transporation supervisor.
On July 26, the scene of the accident was marked by a row of orange traffic cones a few feet west of the bridge house. A strip of sheetmetal was stretched over the missing piece of guardrail.
Crash prompts bridge closure
Crews repairing a 13-foot section of guardrail damaged on the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge will close the right eastbound lane beginning Monday, Aug. 2, said Amanda Glynn, a bridge program manager at the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Eastbound traffic will be obstructed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday, Glynn said. Repairs are scheduled to conclude by Friday morning.
