Lightning strikes lead to Wrightsville power outage

Must read

A lightning strike to an electrical pole in Wrightsville Beach overnight Wednesday led to power outages at the south end of the island Thursday morning, town manager Tim Owens said.

Wrightsville Beach Fire Chief Frank Smith said the department responded to a call at 5 a.m. Thursday, June 25. An electrical pole on Waynick Boulevard had caught fire, he said, so the crew kept the fire from spreading and called Duke Energy.

The fire department was called back to the area for another issue with an electrical pole around 7:30 a.m., Smith said. One of the switches on the pole gave way, Owens said, and it had to be replaced. That incident caused the power outages.
