Rain, moon, tides raise waters in Wrightsville Beach

Must read

Heavy rains and the full moon brought high tides and standing water to Wrightsville Beach this weekend.

The National Weather Service Wilmington said the Wrightsville Beach area got 3.5 to 4 inches of rain since a storm front moved in on Sept. 23. With its northeasterly onshore flow, the storm was primed to deliver rain to the region, the NWS said.

Town manager Tim Owens said there was no reported damage, but there were reports of standing water in several locations, including the intersection of  Channel Avenue at Sweeney Street. However, the high tides did take down the northern most lifeguard chair on Monday morning, near Shell Island Resort.

Saturday produced some of the most steady rain, which resulted in flooded sidewalks at the Seapath Tower condominium, but no damage to the building. Property manager David Foster said that the waters around the marina will rise this high on a few occasions each year, usually along with heavy rains and high tides.

“Some residents joked it was like an infinity pool,” Foster said of the high waters.

The NWS said some of the high water could be attributed to the full moon on Sunday, which raises tides higher than normal. But with winds moving in a southerly direction and reducing the storm threat, along with the passing lunar cycle, the NWS said waters in the area should come down over the next few days.
