Wrightsville Beach, New Hanover County readies for Labor Day activities

Must read

Labor Day, this year celebrated on Monday, Sept. 7, is traditionally viewed as the last day of summer. But for Wrightsville Beach officials, this year’s Labor Day will mostly be viewed like just another summer beach day.

Unlike the July 4th Independence Day holiday, which attracts major crowds to Wrightsville Beach, officials will be treating this weekend’s festivities like they do other summer days, said town manager Tim Owens. Lifeguard and police will be on full duty, as will sanitation workers to keep the beach and bathrooms clean, he said.

While town offices will be closed, parking enforcement will be open regular hours, as paid parking rules will remain in place, he said.

However, the city of Wilmington won’t be checking meters on Labor Day, giving visitors to the Port City more opportunities for free parking for downtown events, which includes a free jazz concert.

Percussionist Keith Butler and saxophonist Sean Meade will take the stage at Bailey Theater Park by providing a free jazz performance on Monday, Sept. 7, 6-8 p.m. for the first “Live at Bailey’s” concert of the season. The show will be followed by a jam session; both professional and novice musicians are welcome.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and food. Concerts will take place each Monday until Oct. 26. The series is funded by grants from the Arts Council of Wilmington and New Hanover County.
