Local teenager receives kidney transplant

Must read

After a 14 month wait, Wilmington teenager Alex Brigantti successfully underwent surgery to receive a life-saving kidney transplant on the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 7, according to the A Kidney For Alex Facebook page set up by her family. The 17-year-old was diagnosed with stage three kidney disease in August 2014, which had since progressed to stage five, the disease’s most severe condition. On the page, Alex’s mother Aidimar Richardson said that after the 2:30 a.m. surgery, Alex was in pain, but awake, and that her kidney was already making urine.

“Alex is such a strong amazing girl. She smiled, talked and even laughed a bit although she is in a lot of pain. What an awesome kid!,” wrote Teri Massey, a family friend who has helped organize fundraisers for the family’s medical costs. More information about the fund to help with her family’s medical costs can be found here: http://www.cotaforalexb.com/
