Seahawks lose close game to nationally ranked ODU

Must read

The UNCW men’s soccer team suffered its fourth loss of the season against No. 14 Old Dominion University Wednesday night at UNCW Soccer Stadium with the only goal of the game coming thirty seconds into the second half.

ODU earned its goal on a quick counter attack as senior midfielder Ryan Condotta played a long pass through the Seahawks’ defense to speedy forward Josue Henriquez, who drilled his shot past Seahawk goalkeeper Sean Melvin.

The Seahawks spent the rest of the game searching for an equalizer. The best opportunity came with ten minutes left as a UNCW corner kick landed at the feet of senior Nathaniel Goodwin at the top of the box. Goodwin beat his defender but his left-footed shot sailed just over the crossbar.

The Seahawks continued to press forward, creating more chances than ODU in the final minutes. They dominated possession at times and outshot their opponents 7 to 5, but only managed to put two shots on goal.

The Seahawks are now 8-4-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference. Three of their losses have come against nationally ranked opponents. The team has already secured a berth in the CAA conference tournament but its next matches, against Delaware on Sunday and College of Charleston next Wednesday, determine whether the team gets to host a tournament game.
