Lifeguards make a dozen rescues on busy pre-Fourth Saturday

Must read

By about 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue had made about a dozen rip current related rescues, while law enforcement wrote tickets for violations like glass on the beach and open containers.

“It’s a pretty normal pre-Fourth of July weekend,” park ranger Shannon Slocum said at 2:15 p.m.

The beach was busy, he said—parking on the island was full by around 8:30 a.m. But due to a midday low tide, people were fairly spread out.

“That’s good, because people aren’t right on top of each other,” he said.

Plenty of beachgoers ventured out into the ocean. Lifeguard captain Jeremy Owens said waves were in the two-foot range with moderate rip current activity. He reported a dozen rescues, multiple missing children and a few minor medical issues. All the rescues involved his guards pulling people out of rip currents, which Owens referred to as “active victim rescues.”

“We’ll go get them out before anything becomes too serious,” he said.

He urged beachgoers to ask the closest lifeguard to point out any rip currents forming.
