Sooners Beat the Seahawks

Must read

Norman, OK – Torrid shooting Oklahoma buried 10 three-pointers, including four straight to open the game, and cruised to a 74-53 men’s basketball victory over visiting UNCW on Tuesday at the Lloyd Noble Center.

The Sooners of the Big 12 Conference improved to 2-1 on the season. The Seahawks dropped to 1-2 following the double-digit road loss.

Senior guard Grant Sherfield and junior guard Joe Bamisile paced Porter Moser’s Sooners with 15 points apiece and sophomore guard CJ Noland chipped in 11.

Sophomore guard Trazarien White was UNCW’s top point producer for the third time in as many games with 19 points. The Seahawks shot 36.1 percent on the night and made only 2-for-21 from three-point range.

“We just didn’t have it tonight,” said Takayo Siddle, UNCW’s third-year head coach. “It was one of those nights and you have some of those. We were a couple steps too slow and we didn’t have same type of energy that I’m used to us having.”

The Sooners converted 7-of-15 three-pointers in the first half and shot 50 percent from the floor to build a 37-21 cushion at the half before leading by as many as 24 points in the final period.

The Seahawks, who shot 33.3 percent in the opening frame, scored the first bucket of the second half to narrow the deficit to 37-23, but the Sooners picked up where they left off and poured it on down the stretch.

OU scored 12 of the first 14 points of the contest and jumped out to a double digit lead, 12-2, when Noland drained a triple in the right corner at the 17-minute mark.

The lead ballooned to 19 points late in the first half. A Sam Godwin dunk staked the Sooners to a 37-18 bulge with 1:55 left in the opening period before a conventional three-point play by Seahawk sophomore Jamarii Thomas 11 seconds later cut the lead to 16 points at intermission.

The Seahawks wrap up their early-season two-game road swing against a pair of Power 5 opponents on Friday with an 8:30 p.m. matchup against UConn in Storrs, Conn.
