Cristobal strengthens to a hurricane

Cristobal strengthened overnight to become a hurricane, although models still predict the storm will stay well off shore.

A 5 a.m. Aug. 26 advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center showed Cristobal located at 26N and 71.9W moving north at 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph.

Models show Hurricane Cristobal passing by the North Carolina coast during the day Wednesday. The likely impact to the Wrightsville Beach area will be high surf and dangerous rip currents.
