Gasoline found in stormwater drain on Wrightsville Avenue

Must read

A section of Lumina Commons parking lot was blocked off today around noon as the Wilmington Fire Department and a crew from the Wilmington hazardous waste company SR&R Environmental attempted to locate the source of gasoline found in a stormwater drain on Wrightsville Avenue.

Captain George Bryan of the WFD said his team was attempting to isolate the problem.

“We’ve got our monitors assessing the situation as far as a public safety standpoint, but there is no official determination as to where the gas is coming from,” Bryan said.

The WFD, he said, began receiving complaints in early September.

“We’ve had complaints of odor and vapor, beginning a couple of weeks ago, and it was brought to our attention again Friday, and again yesterday. We self-initiated coming out here today,” Bryan said.

Two workers from SR&R Environmental were inspecting a storm drain next to Crest Fitness while another was across the street at the Polar Pack convenient store and gas station.

“We’re assessing the immediate problems and have an active cleanup going on right now,” Bryan said. “Stormwater and environmental groups from the state are going to assess the situation and work on the long-term consequences and solutions.”
