Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scams

Must read

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is advising residents to beware of phone scams soliciting money for what may initially appear to be a legitimate cause.

These scam attempts may include phony IRS/Treasury calls, calls threatening utility shutoffs, lotteries, sweepstakes and scams targeting grandparents, among other variations.

The office warns against sending any money over the phone or via the internet without verifying that the request comes from a legitimate source. Anyone with questions or concerns can call the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office at 910-798-4162.
