Harbor Island Garden Club decorates ‘Pink Ribbon Tree’ for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Must read

Members of the Harbor Island Garden Club, along with the help of Wrightsville Beach parks and recreation staff, decorated the “Pink Ribbon Tree” in Harbor Way Garden at Wrightsville Beach Park on Thursday morning. Each ribbon bears the name of either a  local victim or survivor of breast cancer. Of the 100 ribbons hanging from the tree, 70 have names, and the garden club welcomes other Wrightsville Beach residents to submit names for the ribbons. It’s the third consecutive year the club has decorated the tree.

Garden club member Elise Running said tree helps bring comfort to survivors and family members who have been affected by breast cancer.

“You wouldn’t believe how many people will come here and sit,” she said, referring to the tables that sit near the tree.

Another member said that being able to see the ribbons from the street helped raise the profile of the tree, as well as breast cancer awareness.

“It makes a statement,” said Shirley Gearhart.

The Harbor Island Garden Club maintains Harbor Way Garden through the selling of personalized bricks and paver stones.
