Fourth of July update

Must read

So far the command center at United States Coast Guard Station Wrightsville Beach has not had to respond to any major issues.

Around 1:30 p.m. Wrightsville Beach Police Chief Dan House said the count for Masonboro Island was about 200 boats and 1,200 people, which is much less than previous years.

Masons Inlet has around 300 boats anchored, mostly on the Figure Eight Island side.

House said the smaller crowds on Masonboro Island could be due to both Hurricane Arthur and the police department concentrating on stopping illegal boat ferrying from Wrightsville Beach. Only two people have been detained on Masonboro Island so far.

Wrightsville Beach Fire Chief Frank Smith said Ocean Rescue has not had to respond to any major incidents as well.
