Wilmington to host 13th Annual Southeastern North Carolina’s Celebration and Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Junior

The MLK Celebration Committee Presents the Southeastern North Carolina’s Celebration and Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Jan. 12-20, leading to the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday the third Monday of January.

The week of celebration culminates with the downtown Wilmington parade Monday Jan. 19, which will proceed from Third Street in front of the Wilma Daniels Art Gallery, travel south on Third to Princess Street, and end at Fourth and Brunswick streets.

Scheduled events and activities begin Monday, Jan. 12,  with an 11 a.m. press conference at the William E. Murphy Sports Complex.

The full schedule of events includes:

MLK Press Conference – Monday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. at the William E. Murphy Sports Complex, 401 S. Eighth St. Lunch will be provided.  Sponsors are encouraged to attend.

Wilmington Minority Networking Group Meet and Greet – Hosted by the MLK Celebration Committee from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12 at TheaterNOW, 19 S. 10th St.  Light hors d’oeuvres will be served with a cash bar.

MLK Gospel Competition – Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. at Williston Middle School’s auditorium, 401 S. 10thStreet, featuring performances by various choirs from southeastern North Carolina.

A Night at the Theater – A production of “The Mountain Top,” produced by Kevin Green and Techmoja Dance and Theater Co., will take place at 7 p.m. at the Red Barn Theater, 1122 S. Third St.

Martin Luther King Jr. Banquet –  6:30 p.m. Friday Jan. 16at Cape Fear Community College’s Union Station, 502 N. Front St. The guest speaker is N.C. State Gubernatorial Candidate, Honorable Kenneth Spaulding. Dinner will be provided with live jazz and a silent auction. Tickets are $60.

NAACP/MLK Breakfast – 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 in the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Warwick Center. Guest speaker is Rev. Ben Chavis.  Tickets are $25.

Kids Fun Day – 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 at the William E. Murphy Sports Complex, 401 S. Eighth St. Presented by the Wilmington Parks and Recreation Department. Games, face painting exhibits and refreshments available for all ages.

The Ecumenical Service – 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18 at B’Nai Israel Synagogue Temple, Chestnut and 25th Street, hosted by the Ministerial Roundtable. The guest speaker is Rev. Dr. Wayne Johnson Sr.  from St. Stephen AME Church

Historically Black College & University (HBCU) Experience – 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18 at the CFCC Schwartz Center, 601 N. Front St., downtown Wilmington. This year’s experience will feature the Elizabeth City State University Marching Band and N.C. Central University Marching Band.  Sponsored by FPJ Consulting and the MLK Celebration Committee. Tickets are $10 in advance.

The MLK Jr. Parade – Monday Jan. 19 at 11 a.m., historic downtown Wilmington. Parade participation information will be issued in the Schwartz Center lobby. For details and route information, visit  http://www.mlkjrcelebration-senc10.com/schedule.htm

UNCW 2015 MLK Celebration – 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 at UNCW’s Kenan Auditorium. Keynote speaker is Angela Davis.
