Crews excavating in front of the Alton Lennon Federal Building on Water Street in downtown Wilmington March 22 unearthed a cannon on the riverbank.
The Wilmington Police Department was called to the scene to make sure the cannon was safe and officials from the Cape Fear Museum and Fort Fisher archaeological society were contacted, the city’s communications manager, Malissa Talbert, stated in a March 22 press release.
The site was secured and experts from both of these organizations will examine the cannon to learn more about it and determine steps for its preservation.
