Kites fliers spread out around the north end of Wrightsville Beach in front of the Shell Island Resort Saturday, Nov. 8 for the Cape Fear Kite Festival.
A light breeze out of the northeast allowed a few of the large kites to rise into the sky during the morning, including an enormous kite in the shape of the character Toothless from the movie “How to Train Your Dragon.”
Kite fliers came from as far away as Florida and Washington, D.C.
Although winds were only 4 to 5 mph around midday, participants said Sunday’s forecast looked more promising, with weather reports calling for 8 mph north winds around noon.
