Hearings set on repeal of coastal hazard designation

Must read

State officials are proposing to do away with a designation for land that is subject to flooding, high waves and strong currents during a major storm, and are asking residents of coastal counties to comment.

The reason given by the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission is that the High Hazard Flood Area of Environmental Concern is redundant; its provisions are included in current state building codes and federal regulations.

The Coastal Area Management Act identifies a number of Areas of Environmental Concern to designate special risks involved with coastal properties. These are areas that may be susceptible to floods, erosion, or environmental risks associated with building on the coastline. They also may be targeted for protection for aesthetic or socioeconomic reasons.

Residents of the Cape Fear region wishing to comment on this proposed change may attend one of the hearings scheduled in the area:

May 12: Oak Island Town Hall, 4601 East Oak Island Dr., 3 p.m.

May 12: New Hanover County Government Center, 230 Government Center Dr., Wilmington, 7 p.m..

May 14: Surf City Town Hall, 214 New River Dr., 3 p.m.
